There are so many test frameworks and guidelines for testing javascript applications, such as QUnit, YUI, Jasmine, and Mocha. Unit testing in the JS environment will generally improve test coverage for your JS application. However, not all application put their business logic heavily in the JS layer, so perhaps unit testing these JS frameworks is an ineffective approach.

In this presentation, we will explore the different classes of modern web applications, and attempt to establish a approach to create a sensible testing strategy for your front-end application.

Heartbleed, Shellshock, POODLE, GHOST, FREAK… With severe security vulnerabilities on the rise, how can we ensure our systems are adequately protected? Unattended package upgrades can help, but only if they are properly set up and monitored. File system encryption can reduce the risk of a sensitive data breach, and automated TLS certificate provisioning, replete with HSTS and OCSP, protects the security of our web communications. This talk covers these and other essential Linux security topics in a practical manner that can be put to use immediately.

    Summary:
It has been said that we are now in the age of machine learning. Machine learning is used more in your daily life than you are probably aware of.

In this session we’ll look at the basics of machine learning, a powerful technology to enable a machine to get better at a task, even predicting data - which could be audio patterns, unknown patterns, numbers, and many, many more applications. We will look at how to setup Machine Learning experiments fairly easily, visualize data, and analyze our algorithms.

Are you fearful there will be too much statistics and math involved? Have no fear, we'll cover the basics and terms you need to get started.

Join OWASP and the Cloud Security Alliance for food and drinks at our Annual Joint Meeting.

Topic: Effectiveness of Web Application Firewalls to Protect Against the OWASP Top 10

Web Application Firewalls (WAF) are essential components of a secure web application deployment. Capable of filtering network traffic on all OSI layers, they understand web specific communication protocols and programming languages. In addition, many WAFs can now generate rules and policies based on legitimate network traffic analysis, making them easier than ever to deploy. In a nutshell, if you are not using one already, you probably need one! But these specialized firewalls are not the silver bullets they sometime claim to be. When vendors say that their WAF enables organizations to be protected against the OWASP Top 10 most critical web application security risks, is this really accurate?

In late 2015, we conducted intensive tests on the most common commercial and open source WAFs, where a team of penetration testers tried to exploit vulnerable web applications. We tested these products to their limits against each of the OWASP Top 10, trying to bypass their attack detection algorithms.

This presentation is not about which web application firewall did best in our test, but it’s rather a study of WAF’s effectiveness against each of the OWASP Top 10. Can we rely on them to protect our applications or should we implement other safeguards to mitigate the risk?
We will conclude our presentation with an overview of additional safeguards that complement the use of web application firewalls to provide a high level of security against malicious attacks.

Speaker: David Caissy, IT Security Consultant, Albero Solutions Inc.

David Caissy has 18 years of experience as a security consultant and a web application architect. He has performed security audits, vulnerability assessments, web application penetration tests and has designed several secure systems. In addition, he has been teaching web application security to developers and penetration testers over the last 15 years, including the "OWASP Top 10: Exploitation and Effective Safeguards" course at several conferences, including AppSecUSA 2014 and 2015, AppSec California 2015 and 2016 as well as giving a workshop at Defcon 24.

Our August meetup will be hosted by the awesome folks atChowNow , and their very own developers will be presenting two of the three talks at this meetup!
Sep Ehr will be presenting "Harness the power of Python magic methods and lazy objects: Don't forget that With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.": In this talk we will use magic methods to create an Application Programmatic Interface (API) that returns lazy Redis queries, the same way that Django queries are lazy objects.

Kevin London will be presenting "The Two Trains and Other Refactoring Analogies": Have you ever heard someone say, 'This code sucks. We need to rewrite it.'? I've been there and it usually doesn't end well. We'll discuss analogies around continual improvement and how to avoid declaring technical bankruptcy.

There will also be a talk by Chris Morales from Cars.com, title and description TBA!

    ABOUT THE PRESENTATION:

With 23 over million PC downloads worldwide, Minecraft is a game that allows children and adults to explore worlds and create their own ones. A player’s natural inclination is to work together with others; however, it is notoriously confusing and tedious to set up a Minecraft multiplayer server, and keep it up to date. Using Dockerfiles and Docker images, it is possible to automate the setup of a Minecraft multiplayer server, running anywhere capable of hosting the Docker daemon.

A Minecraft server is an example of a state-full application, something that until recently has been discouraged for container deployments. Enabling not just Minecraft servers, but many other state-full applications such as databases, we introduce Docker containers and the open-source storage driver, REX-Ray. External storage allows easy upgrade with scalable storage for creating vast, detailed worlds, or to handle more players. This can connect Docker containers to the cloud storage available in AWS, Google Compute Engine, and OpenStack (Rackspace). This can also be deployed in physical datacenters, or using VirtualBox on a higher end PC.

In our presentation, we will demonstrate how to deploy a Minecraft server in a public cloud in less than 30 minutes on using Docker and REX-Ray. Attendees are invited to bring a Minecraft client to participate in the demonstration. Yes, we could have done a database demo, but that meetup would feel like you’re still at work. This will be fun!

    ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Co-presenters will be college students Akira Wong of UC Irvine, and Proud Heng of UC San Diego.

Big Data has exploded and engulfed us all and has led to a technology and business revolution. Every website, email, SMS text, mouse click, download, Internet of Things (IoT), sensors and online purchase generates data, a lot of data. This data is being assembled into massive data sets and used by scientists, researchers, business and the government to develop new products, predict epidemics, calculate risk, understand consumer behavior and formulate public policies. Entrepreneurs are pursuing these Big Data opportunities in what is becoming the 21st century equivalent of the gold rush.

Our speakers will share their views on the opportunities and challenges science and entrepreneurs face in building Big Data ventures, and give a clearer view of what’s coming our way.

    Scaling Node.js : Hybrid use of Scala/Akka and Node.js

In this talk I am going to share the scaling challenges that we have encountered over the past few years.  Our two main technology stacks are node.js / postgres / angular for our front-end and API, and scala / akka / finagle along with apache spark for our bidder and data stack.  As a new company we have huge scaling issues. In this talk we will discuss what we are doing to address scaling high volume / low latency systems (200K QPS responding in < 30ms) and how you may use some of these techniques to solve similar challenges.

    About the Speaker:

Dave Gullo is a hacker and entrepreneur who has been building the web since 1994. His roles have included founder / entrepreneur, software and systems engineer, human computer interaction, and technology team leader.

Some of the interesting projects he has been involved with include: bootstrapping one of the web's first online snowboard shops, building large-scale unified messaging systems, engineering print-to-web systems and free-form full text searching of careers and autos, optimizing the performance of in-flight entertainment systems, building rental management systems for ski resorts, building innovative shopping experiences for ecommerce like "size-based shopping" and "car-figurators", "tracking the online trackers" by automating thousands of concurrent browsers and observing network activity and data collection, and silver-plattering technology and top-notch hackers to post series-A companies in the Silicon Valley.

Today, Dave is the Co-Founder and Fire Chief of Technology (and Lead Arsonist) at VideoAmp where he hacks and prototypes new technology and manages the technology team's growth and culture.
